Case Histories is described as a mystery, but I really would consider it more of a family drama and thriller. There are four intertwined storylines: three cold cases and a detective who is trying to solve them. I was fairly engaged through most of the book but it was not satisfying as a mystery – Jackson does solve the cases, in some sense, but to some extent they were more “revealed” to the reader than actually solved. The characters are not all that likeable and they seemed to lack depth; neither the characters nor the plot were always believable to me. The plot is definitely gritty in places as well, which is not really my thing. I enjoyed it while reading it but my overall impression is rather “meh”.
