The Courtesan, by Susan Carroll, is the sequel to The Dark Queen, which I read a few months ago. The books are historical romance with a bit of fantasy thrown in, taking place during the reign of Catherine de Medici in France (the mid-1500s). They tell the story of three sisters who are “wise women” trained in the ways of ancient healing and magical arts. The Dark Queen focused on the eldest of three sisters, while The Courtesan focused on the second sister, Gabrielle. It is difficult to tell more of the story without giving anything away, but it focuses on the trials and tribulations of Gabrielle and the man she loves.
I enjoyed The Courtesan just as much as The Dark Queen and found it hard to put down. I was engaged and eager to find out what was going to happen next. The story was very much a sequel to the first book, more so than I expected. All of the same key characters were in it, and the overarching thematic events were continued as if it was just the same story broken into multiple books. This made it fun to read, as if I had jumped right back in to the world I left a few months ago when I finished The Dark Queen. I look forward to reading the third book!
