I had so many books going at once (which is quite unusual for me, but was due to particular circumstances) that I am still in the middle of two of them (well, nearing the end of one) so I don’t have any new reviews to write yet. So I thought I write up something random related to reading that I was thinking about recently: where I read.
When I am in the middle of a good book (or even if it’s not so good, but I’m just in super-reading mode), I take the book with me everywhere in the house, and read while I’m doing other things. I don’t know if this is typical of “readers” (see my earlier post on the definition of readers) or not, but it is certainly typical of me; I think I have done this ever since I could read to myself. To illustrate what I mean: I will read while eating, while brushing my teeth, while brushing my hair, while blow-drying my hair, while getting dressed, while waiting for something to load on the internet, while putting on my shoes, while walking from one room to another (even going up and down the stairs, which I realize is a tad dangerous). I have even been know to attempt to read while drying myself after a shower (it doesn’t work so well). If books were waterproof I would probably try to read while in the shower. It’s a funny habit, because it’s not really that I’m trying to multi-task (well, I guess it is, but I don’t think of it that way); it’s that my book is so good I don’t want to put it down in order to attend to other somewhat mundane tasks. Perhaps I also do it more when I am not getting enough time to just read (while not doing anything else), so I should probably pay attention to that and make sure I do get enough time to read. But I think even if I did have enough dedicated reading time, I would still read as I wandered through the house and did other activities.
I also do not just have one favorite reading spot. I will read sitting at the kitchen table, sitting at a desk, sitting (or lying) on the couch or futon, sitting on or in bed, lying on the floor. When I was young I would lie (or drape, perhaps) over the arm or the back of the couch.
What about you? Do you also read while doing other things, or know people that do? Do you read anywhere or do you have one favorite reading spot?
